Friday Photo #719 – Rainbow Sky

I normally consider the blustery autumn weather of September and October to be ‘rainbow season’ here on Lofoten. This past Saturday night, the rainbow was not during the day, but at night, as a strong solar wind hit the earth bringing a wildly colorful display of northern lights to the evening sky. Luckily the weather was cooperative for us here on Lofoten!
The aurora was actually almost too far to the south for viewing from near my house, but at times there was still some fantastic color in the northern half of the sky. I wish I could have gotten a slightly better composition, but my neighborhood beach was covered in seaweed from the northern winds which have been blowing lately, so it was better to shoot from along the road, looking across Nappstraumen towards Himmeltindan.
The second photo was actually looking straight up, before I even made it out of my backyard!
I eventually made it down to Storsandnes beach, which I wasn’t able to shoot at all of the last aurora season due to road work – namely a bright light shining over the beach all night from the construction office. But that is gone and the beach is nice and dark again. By the time I had arrived though, the aurora had faded somewhat back to a more normal green color, with some occasional moments of brighter color. The better show was definitely in the earlier part of the evening.
